Although unappreciated in this day and age, in Palladio's time Venice was not just a city. It was the center of a vast empire with military and commercial enclaves all around the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean. At its height of power, Venice was one of the greatest military and commercial powers on Earth. In population, four times the size of Rome and London combined.
