Very interesting review of the alchemical symoblism in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream:

Alchemy in Midsummer Night's Dream

One of the key takeawasy: there are FOUR worlds in Midsummers Night, just like there are Four Worlds in alchemy (earth, air, wind and fire). In Midsummer Night, these four worlds are represented by:

  • Fairy World
  • Athenian Royalty
  • Rustic commoners
  • Courting lovers
Eventually these four worlds are brought together in harmony, by the end of the play, which is the end-all and be-all of alchemy (one might suppose).

Could these not correspond to the four faculties of man? To the body, the mind, the desire and the Will?
  • Rustic commoners --> body
  • Fairy world --> mind
  • Courting lovers --> desire
  • Athenian royalty --> Will
Perhaps..
